Abstract

Background/Objectives: Sustainability in the use of material and economy are the watchwords of the modern engineering fraternity. Many structural systems have been evolved for this purpose. At present, the qualities of the tensegrity structures, which make the technology attractive for human use, are their resilience and ability to use the material in a very economical way. Thus, the construction of the structures using tensegrity principle will make them highly resilient and reasonably economical at the same time. Methods: Though a lot of research has been carried out on the behaviour of tensegrity systems, the area requires further research for a complete understanding. Hence, this project is aimed at analysis of a tensegrity based roof structure. The prototype module used is half-cuboctahedron. Findings: First, a single module measuring 1 m x 1 m in size, is modelled and analysed using an FEM based software. The investigations are then extended to a 2 x 2 grid, measuring 2 m x 2 m in size. The behavior of the grid is studied under the application of external loads varying the prestressing forces on the members. Later, a 4 x 4 grid, measuring 4 m x 4 m in size and an 8 x 8 grid, measuring 8 m x 8 m in size are modelled and analysed based on the 2 x 2 grid system. From the analysis, it is found that the displacements of the system satisfy the permissible limits as per previous research values. The member forces have also been analysed. Applications/Improvements: The performance of the half-cuboctahedron tensegrity grid structure proves to be more suitable for larger span structures.

Abstract

Over the North Indian Ocean (NIO) basin, the uncertainty in tropical cyclone (TC) track forecast is depicted by constructing a cone of uncertainty (COU) around the forecast track for the benefit of disaster managers in their decision-making, especially with respect to area of evacuation. The COU is constructed by drawing a tangent to the circles with the radii equal to average track forecast errors during the past five years for forecast times of 12, 24, 36, …, up to 120 h. The COU which is revised periodically to reflect the track forecast accuracy, has been recently revised by India Meteorological Department (IMD) from the post-monsoon season of 2014. Hence, a study has been undertaken to evaluate this newly introduced COU forecast by IMD. The revised radii used to construct the COU have shrunk by 20-30% due to improved TC track forecast in the recent years (2009-2013). For the new COU, the radii of circles for 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h forecasts are 65, 105, 140, 170 and 200 nm respectively, against 80, 135, 185, 235 and 285 nm for the previous COU (2009-2013). The accuracy of the newly constructed forecast COU is 70-80% and is comparable with those of other leading TC forecasting centres in the world.

Abstract

All research made on the Object-Oriented (OO) paradigms focus on the fundamentals of analysis, programming, and design. The primary problem found in testing the systems which are object-oriented is a methodology of standard testing and this may not be very useful. The test case may execute software using a new set consisting of some input values and will then compare them to the output to check if the test has passed. An optimum test case set is obtained using a process of selection that is viewed to be a problem of optimization. Thus, metaheuristic optimizing or searching is a technique used often for optimizing or searching which is used in automated testing of software. The BAT Algorithm is a metaheuristic that is dependent on the property of echolocation of the miniaturized scale bats. The property further controls the conduct of search of the bats of a small-scale and making them discover prey thus enabling them to identify distinctive types of bugs irrespective of the fact they are found to be dull. The work also proposed a new and hybrid Tabu search algorithm using the BAT for the selection of test case.
